“Music of the Water” exhbited at the Hilton Head Biennale, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Hilton Head Island - May 4 - May 26, 2021.
The inspiration for “Music of the Water” was twofold. First was a photo I took of lily pads in a lake near my home. I was intrigued with viewing the organic forms as abstract shapes, and how those abstract shapes suggest notes on a musical staff.
Second was a news article I clipped from the newspaper in 2011 and keep as inspiration on the wall of my studio. Describing microbes that had been discovered by scientists in deep and inhospitable oceans of the earth, it suggested that life is resilient, ebullient. (Text from that news article is collaged beneath layers of the printed fabric – visible in several places through the sheer over-layer.)
This work is intended to give voice to an imagined rich, intricate music of the water: layered patterns of tune and instrumentation, harmonies, counterpoint and crescendo
Inkjet printed poplin photo on fabric, and printed sheer fabrics and muslin, collaged and stitch construction, with machine stitched details. Acrylic paints and mediums. Finishing: bound fabric-backed. The back has a hanging pocket and a rod, for traditional hanging tapestry presentation. The surface is sealed with acrylic medium.
