I am a morning person. I experience the transforming power of sunlight each day from my front porch. Morning reveals. Morning energizes. I’ve hand printed fabrics and thin paper using movement-filled patterns, the shapes of natural grasses and abstract hand-cut tree stencils to recreate the feeling of the world being told by morning sun: Time to wake up!

This work includes elements of hand printmaking, direct painting on fabric, and quilting construction. I created the large yellow sections of the work with spontaneous painting wet-on-wet with fabric on a vinyl surface, with the back side creating an unpredictable monotype print. The other fabric pieces—geometric patterns and grass-like forms—were printed by hand as monotypes with acrylics before incorporating them into the work. After I create the individual sections, I stitch them together to create the composition. Then I look to see what additional elements will pull it all together and express the vitality of morning. The entire surface is defined by patterned machine quilting connecting the surface fabric to the felt batting behind it.
