At the river just a few miles from my home, I have experienced morning. When sun awakens a river’s edge it is a time of transformation. Shadowed grasses become defined by light. Stand still and wait. A long-legged egret may enter your sight, walking with its careful gait. It may stand still there with you, awaiting what the day will bring.

It’s my hope that the complex, layered way I make the image captures the complex, layered world of a morning river’s edge.

This work includes elements of hand printmaking, direct painting on fabric, and quilting construction. I created the largest sections of the work with spontaneous painting wet-on-wet with fabric on a vinyl surface, with the back side creating an unpredictable monotype print. All other fabric pieces were printed by hand with acrylics before incorporating them into the work.

After I create the individual sections, I quilt them, so the entire surface is defined by patterned machine quilting connecting the surface fabric to the felt batting behind it. Then I stitch the parts together to create the composition. Finally, after the piece is constructed, I look to see what additional surface painting will pull it all together.
