“What Were We Supposed To Be?”
39” x 120”
Two girls wearing their look-at-us-being-good-dresses are in an environment dense with images and color. As in dreams and memories, images are juxtaposed unexpectedly. Forms and photo images suggest tradition, home, passages, work and societal expectations. The job of the girls is to figure out the meaning of it all.
This quilt is a very personal exploration of childhood for me. The two girls depicted in panels two and three are drawn from a family photo of my sister and myself at ages 4 and 3. As I created this work, I relived memories, dreams and experiences from my own childhood. At the same time, the work addresses expectations all girls growing up in the 1950’s. Text that appears throughout the work speaks to the societal norms and expectations of girls and women during that time.
The quilt is constructed of hand-printed and painted fabrics and photo transfers. All surface design is created with acrylic paints. Collage construction. The elements have been collaged to raw-edge muslin panels. Four panels comprise the work, each approximately 30”W x 39”H. Machine stitched. Backed with grey eco-felt and a hanging bar.
