Stepping on the Cracks

The journey of the young girl. A new chapter.
Inspired by poetry and memories, I gathered together fabrics and images that speak to me of a tough environment. The evocative gate is a photograph of an entry into an alley in DeLand downtown, my hometown. I used it as a starting place to suggest going from one place to another. Perhaps through tough terrain. Unlike some images I have created in other works of a little girl, this one is full of motion and energy. Watching her progress are a pair of birds, observers and messengers.
Original fabrics: hand printed (monotypes, relief prints, resists, screen printing and stencils) with acrylic paint on cotton muslin and sateen fabrics, collaged and stitch construction, with machine stitched details. Finishing: bound fabric-backed. The back has a hanging pocket and a rod, for traditional hanging tapestry presentation without frame. All collaging is with archival matte acrylic medium, which also protects the surface.
The work hangs from a rod inserted in a sewn sleeve on the back, for wall display with invisible hardware, unframed: a traditional textile art presentation.
