I suggest a story in this work, but leave enough questions unanswered that a viewer is able to bring other experiences to its meaning.
The initial inspiration for this work was the overlooked, discarded windows found in the corner of the garden. They are just compelling to me. I am intrigued with the way they are discarded in the garden, with vines growing over them. I love their angles. I like the dark panes contrasted to the reflected light. This image made me think immediately of a secret garden, a place of fantasy and wonder, or possibly a place of escape. And I also like the sense of deep green growth taking place. It inspired me to create the foliage-patterned fabrics used for the borders.
Finally, I am interested in this little girl. I wonder about her emotional journey. I want the lush garden environment to convey a richness to her life. I felt very connected to her with the tactile experiences of drawing her, placing her in the garden, and collaging the sheer fabrics that comprise the skin tones and her dress.
