My understanding of public murder has grown and deepened. In Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel, Maus, Holocaust survivor Vladek Spiegelman remembers: “The Germans intend to make examples of them… They hanged there for one full week. I did not want to go outside to pass where they were hanging.” Each public murder victimized both an individual and a community. Such control-by-targeted-brutality crosses cultures and years.  It also characterized America’s Jim Crow South. Those in power printed post cards of Black lynching victims. Whole communities were terrorized. Who might be next? I chose to depict both the murdered and the ones who had to look. Remembering, we should not look away. 

“Do Not Look Away” has been juried for exhibit as part of “bearing Witness,” SAQA Global Exhibition, premiering August 2024 - at Raritan Valley Community College, Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. This exhibition asks artists to consider the Holocaust and other Global Genocides as inspiration for their work. The exhibition will educate viewers about the perils of antisemitism, racism, homophobia, sexism and inequity. Our challenge is to remember and learn from the history of The Holocaust and other Global Genocides and to amplify our shared humanity.

The exhibit will travel through 2027. It is available for purchase, with delivery at the completion of the exhibit schedule, approximately December, 2027.
