Houses falling into a sinkhole. A visual metaphor for the feeling that life events can create – that the very earth is caving away beneath you. In this quilt story, the earth is caving away beneath the home, with other homes already down in the hole. The suggestion is that others have experienced this too. Or that this particular family has experienced losing everything more than once.
This work began with writing – memories. Thoughts. Rants. Songs. I filled the muslin piece that became the sky, as well as the fabric pieces that formed the girl, with words. The story unfolds on top of the words. The girl is not in danger now. She has lived through whatever the events may have been and can look back on them from a place of safety. And maybe some peace and understanding,
Original fabrics: hand printed (monotypes, relief prints, resists and stencils) with acrylic paint on cotton muslin and sheer fabrics, collaged and stitch construction, with machine stitched details. Transfer of a photograph (the sinkhole) to muslin. Finishing: bound fabric-backed. The back has a hanging pocket and a rod, for traditional hanging tapestry presentation without frame. All collaging is with archival matte acrylic medium, which also protects the surface
