The very air
Tonight I am thinking about breath. And air.
This evening and this morning we have actually experienced beautiful, cool air. It is a rare delight in Florida, where even through November it sometimes feels like summer.
Mornings on the porch are cool. A weekend bike ride allowed me to feel cool air on my arms and in my lungs.
As I go about daily errands and indoor places where I mask up, returning to the outside to breathe in air makes me appreciate it.
It’s hard to capture the feel of air in artwork. A few pieces where I feel like I have come close are ones that I like. This quilt, Becoming One With the Night, is currently traveling with the SAQA global exhibit “Beyond the Mirror,” and the poem following is what I paired with it in my book of artworks and poems.
The air this morning
Is altogether different
from yesterday morning.
That air on my skin
Liquid-warm. Moist.
And in the grey cover
Above the house across the street
I watched planes take off
Then disappear into thickness.
The air this morning is cool
On my skin.
Wet only in that it brings to mind
Streams, fast-moving over rocks.
And the sky
Above the house across the street
Is pale blue.
I will watch planes recede
Into distant sky.
This porch. This chair. This place.
The point of the compass
Inserted firmly
So that around — all around
I draw the arc of where I am.

A few of my abstract landscape collages also have depictions of air that feel right to me.
(You can find all three of these paper collages on my website in the Wednesday Collage GALLERY)
I hope that you are breathing in what your body and soul need this week.
